Professor Feelgood

Professor Feelgood by Leisa Rayven

4 stars!

“ A soulmate is someone who sees all the parts you’re ashamed of, and loves you anyway.”

Book editor Asha is looking for the next big thing in the publishing world. While doing research for her next book to publish, she gets an idea to approach an Instagram poet who anonymously posts online. Hoping he will be the next bestseller she messages him and after some convincing he agrees. After everything is finalized, she realizes her dream man is a giant jerk, and now she has to work with him one on one.

“How do you protect yourself from the person who was born with an all-access pass to your heart?”

Leisa Rayven is a magical unicorn writer, everything she writes, I love. Professor Feelgood was a great next installment in the Masters of Love series (it can be read as a standalone) and I loved Asha and the Professor so so much. My favorite part about this book was the theme of looking inward and recognizing your mistakes. Also the power of perspective was an excellent theme of this book, one that doesn’t get covered a lot in romance.

I love Rayven’s stories and her writing. If I could I would go all Kathy Bates on her and have her write me stories all day long, I just don’t want to break her legs haha.

“You’re the one thing in this world that helps me make sense.”

Mister Romance

Mister Romance by Leisa Ravyen

4.5 stars!

Eden is on her last leg at her job at Pulse magazine when she gets wind of a man named Mister Romance, a high paid escort who gives women the most romantic night of their dreams, without sex. Intrigued, Eden makes it her mission to find out who this mystery man is. When she does find him, he wants to make her a deal: if he can make her fall in love with him in three dates, Eden drops the story. If not, she gets full exclusive.

Eden:

Ever since I picked up Bad Romeo three years, I knew Leisa Rayven was one of those authors, the one where I love every single one of her books. Mister Romance is a book I fell in love with right from the beginning, with original strong characters readers can relate to, and a romance that had me holding my breath at times and swooning a bit. And I don’t friggin swoon.

The book is a little bit slow to start but really picks up at that 20% mark. I loved Eden as the main character, she was tenacious and driven, but at the same time had empathy and integrity. Max was a bit harder to pin down, but ultimately I loved him by the end of the book and was rooting so hard for him and Eden. This book is a bit sweeter and less angsty than I prefer, my reading tastes lean toward angsty and emotional, but I loved it.

I truly believe that so many readers will love this story. In a time when it’s hard to find a book with an original idea, Ravyen delivers a unique and fascinating romance that I know I will be rereading in the future!

Best Books of 2016

untitled

Best books of 2016!

Here’s my list of my 15 favorite books that I read in 2016! Not all of these were published this year, but it’s the year I read them and I won’t overlook greatness for something as silly as a publication date. Without further ado:

Wolfsong by TJ Klune!!!!

If you would have told me that my all time favorite book of 2016 would be a gay shifter romance, I would have thought you were on crack. But Wolfsong touches your heart and just brings out every feel you have, and then finds more and brings them out too. Beautiful writing, a breathtaking story and a stunning romance, this is one I won’t ever forget. Plus the main character Ox is up there with the likes of Elizabeth Bennett, he’s one of my all time favorite characters.

Beard Science by Penny Reid

I’ve yet to find a Penny Reid book I haven’t liked, this woman is like nerd girl magic! Beard Science is my favorite Winston Brothers book (so far, I have a feeling Billy will be everything) and Cletus. Oh Cletus, I want to find a shrink ray, use it on him and make him the tiny devil on my shoulder. That man, sigh. There are no words. Instead, read the damn book already, will ya?

Paper Princess by Erin Watt

I have to say Paper Princess was a book that slapped me in the face with it’s amazingness. I feel like it came out of nowhere but now that it’s here, everyone has become obsessed with The Royals (myself included). The best YA/NA series I’ve read since Fallen Crest by Tijan, there is no doubt in my mind these Royals will ruin you. I also equally loved the second book Broken Prince, and enjoyed the third. I want more from this author duo!

Unbreak My Heart by Nicole Jacquelyn

Quite simply, the ANGSTIEST book of 2016 and I loved every bit of it! I learned to never doubt the dirty girl book friend who recommended this to me, and I discovered an amazing new author. Military family, regret and angst? Not for the faint of heart and it gets worse before it gets better. But in the end you get a beautiful story. The second book Change of Heart, a standalone was equally as amazing as this one.

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

I took a chance on a new author with this one and I am so glad I did! Bryn Greenwood is an evil genius and leaves the reader with so much to ponder. This is the kind of book that makes you reflect on yourself and how your perception of others can affect their life. It also portrays that just because something seems a certain way, doesn’t mean it is. Bravo Greenwood! I cannot wait to read more from you in the future.

In the Middle of Somewhere by Roan Parrish

An MM romance between a graduate student and a quiet man who lives in a cabin in his new town. Both have issues when it comes to love that they must overcome, but this book was the journey to both of them healing one another. Roan Parrish became a favorite author and a go-to author with this book, I love her writing style and her complex and realistic characters. The second book Out of Nowhere is a fantastic read as well.

Painted Faces

An unconventional romance between a straight drag queen and a curvy Irish girl. This is one of those books I was so skeptical about going into it and came out the other end of the book in awe. My favorite Cosway book to date, she did an amazing job with these two characters. It’s a very special novel.

Veiled

It happened. THIS BOOK HAPPENED!!! This is a spin off of the Experiment in Terror series BUT it can be read as a standalone novel!!! Veiled is about a young girl named Ada who slowly discovers demons and other beings around her. Add in a sexy ginger guide as the romantic interest and I was thrilled! Everything I had hoped it would be. But like I said you can read and enjoy it as a standalone.

29283773

Lingus

Romance with a porn star, sounds raunchy? It’s not! Sweet wonderful slow burn romance between two people who genuinely care for each other. I loved every second of this novel!! Mariana Zapata is the queen of slow burn romances!

Swear on this Life

This is one of those books that hits you with emotion like a friggin mac truck. A journey of self healing and discovery, this also has an unforgettable love story. I ended up bursting into tears on an airplane while reading this book, and I don’t cry in public EVER.

30236300

Black Swan Affair

An angsty love story that centers on a love triangle between two brothers and the woman they both love. I know what you’re thinking, that you hate love triangles. Trust me, let that part go and enjoy the ride. I was blown away by this book and so so happy when I got to the end! Nothing is what you think it is, remember that.

27277165

The Bourbon Thief

A beautiful love story in the 70’s between a young rich girl in the South and the stable hand who is forbidden from her. A family full of secrets, this romance is almost haunting and beautiful at the same time. Proof that Tiffany Reisz can write an amazing book not centered on BDSM or sex.

24889218

Wicked Heart

A second chance romance between a movie star and a stage director. Liam broke Elissa’s heart years ago and she never fully recovered. Now years later they are working on the same stage production and old feelings come back. But Liam is engaged to his costar and Elissa knows falling for him again would be a tragedy. I loved the Bad Romeo books and this is my favorite of the bunch. Is a standalone read with only connected characters.

28809390

The Mind

Kate Stewart is possibly the most underrated indie author out there, this woman writes pure romantic genius!! The Heart is probably one of the few novellas I have ever loved, and I fell in love with Grant and Rose immediately. This is a prequel to The Heart and may not have an HEA in this book, but does in the next one (I promise). I sobbed big ugly tears when reading this and kind of wanted to kill Kate (I didn’t, obviously) but this is proof of how amazing Kate is.

Wicked Heart

Wicked Heart by Leisa Rayven

5 fateful stars!

“I used to think that if I just waited long enough, fate would bring us back together. That our stars would align, or whatever, and you’d come crashing back into my life to stay. But that didn’t happen. So now I say, screw it. I’m done waiting. Sometimes, fate is what you make it.”

This book in one word:

And being the angst whore I am I ate up every single bit of it. I loved Bad Romeo and Broken Juliet, so there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to read the next book Leisa Rayven put out. The arc had been sitting in my kindle for a while, and boy am I kicking myself for not reading it the moment I received it! This was soooooooooo good! (At least, it was for me). The perfect angst fix I needed when my angst supply ran out, and Rayven is the dealer 😉

Wicked Heart is the second chance love story of Liam and Elissa. Six years earlier, Liam and Elissa had a fling, but one that stuck with Elissa throughout the years. Liam left to become a big time movie star and Elissa remained in New York and became a prominent stage manager in the acting community. Now Elissa is working on a new production of Romeo & Juliet with her director friend Marco, and the kicker? It’s starring Liam and his gorgeous fiance Angel.

Now the two are working in close proximity and old tensions and feelings begin to rise. But Elissa doesn’t want to give in to her attractions for many reasons, and Liam wants to be respectful of her.

So based on my 5 star rating I’m pretty sure you’ve deduced I loved this book. If that’s not obvious, let me say it clearly: I loved this book!

If it hadn’t been for stupid real life (always getting in the way, so pesky) I would have finished this book all in one sitting. There came a real point in this book where I was reading late into the night and this was me:

I loved Liam and I loved Elissa, separate and together. I get that their relationship can be seen as a kind of instalove, but it just clicked. Their connection was so tangible to me as a reader, I felt for them the entire book through every choice, every moment. And on the plus side, this book was HOT. For real. I got to have my angst cake AND eat it too???? I’m a happy reader.

Rayven gave excellent explanations for past actions, ones that I had thought were unforgivable but I turned out to be wrong. Elissa wasn’t a doormat, she was a strong woman put in the horrible position of being confronted with the scenario that the love of her life was engaged to another woman. So while she wasn’t perfect, I sure as hell am not going to judge her for it.

Liam as a hero was so genuine, I instantly was on his team. Not that there were a bunch of teams, but if there was one, I’m in it. I was rooting for him and Elissa and while I didn’t understand some things near the beginning of the book, when all was said and done I began to understand his actions when seeing them in a new light.

Another bonus….. this book is a standalone. No waiting, no cliffhangers. Just full on satisfaction at the end of the book. What more could you want?

“The one thing you’re absolutely not allowed to give up on is true love. When you find it, you should grab it with both hands and never let it go, because although it might not always be easy or convenient, it’s worth it.”

Broken Juliet

Broken Juliet (Starcrossed #2) by Leisa Rayven

4.5 stars!

Note: This is the follow up book to Bad Romeo.

Continuing where the first book left off, we get to see the end of Cassie and Ethan’s relationship in the past and the continuation of it in the present. Ethan has sorted through all of his past issues and is hoping Cassie will confront her current ones.

I loved that we finally got to see the big reason behind the past breakup and it was easier to understand why Cassie has so many reservations about getting involved with Ethan again. He basically crushed her heart twice and is coming back and asking for third times a charm. The only thing I would have liked more in this aspect of the book would be more information of her life after the breakup. It’s pretty much awful breakup and then present, so her development into her current self would have been interesting. I don’t mind more chapters! 😉

Reading this book, between past and present Ethan was like reading two completely different characters. He regretted his past, and changed into a better man for Cassie. It was amazing to see his development from tortured soul into a good man. I loved how Ethan fought for Cassie, he stuck to his guns and was going to prove no matter what that he was going to stay this time. That he wanted to make Cassie happy and spend his life with her.

I will say this was so freaking angsty even I had to take a break and put this book down a few times. And I eat up angst like I’m the freakin cookie monster and angst is the best batch of chocolate chip. So pop your valium before cracking this one!!

At this point, I will be reading/buying anything this author produces in the future, her books are the perfect angsty reads for me.

Bad Romeo

Bad Romeo by Leisa Rayven

4.5 stars!

“Sometimes people put up walls, not only to keep people out, but also to see who cares enough to tear them down.”

So, guess who loved this book when most everyone else didn’t?

Guilty as charged. To be fair, I am a total angst whore and gobbled this book up. Want to know what’s even scarier? For all of the angst this book doles out, I’ve read angstier!

This is the story of Cassie and Ethan, who met when they were young aspiring actors. The book begins in the present, three years after Ethan shattered Cassie’s heart, and the two of them are cast as the leads in a new Broadway play. Ethan, after all of the shit he put Cassie through, is desperate to get her back but Cassie won’t let him back in easy.

This book alternates between the present and the past, giving the reader both sides of Cassie and Ethan. Cassie who in the past was a horny, naive virgin and in the present a jaded and bitter woman. Ethan, a dark storm cloud in the past more closed up than a tight clam shell, and in the present a man who had worked through his issues and wants to be redeemed.

I think one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much was because I went into it with the absolute lowest expectations. I also read the spoilers ahead of time and knew the ending would be a cliffhanger and many questions would not be answered, so I came into this book prepared. So many people hated or disliked this book, but I still gave it a shot because my local library has a copy. And if it’s free, why not? Well, I’m glad I did. For me, this book was unputdownable.

I will say I did not care for the whiplash, but in order for a guy to redeem himself, he has to be a dick right? Yeah, Ethan was a dick. But, I felt like he really did change by the time he was an adult. I just really wish I knew what horrible thing he did to Cassie BECAUSE THE AUTHOR DIDN’T TELL US IN THIS BOOK!!!

And the other thing I didn’t care for? That vagina slow clapping line. My god I cringed when I read that. I think it was supposed to be funny, but this was me reading it instead:

Anywoo, if you like angst and men trying to make up for their colossal mistakes, this book is the one for you! I’m actually really excited for book 2 and some answers.
