Veiled

Veiled by Karina Halle

5 stars!

“I feel like each day is leading me down a dark path I might not be able to come back from.”

First off, YOU CAN READ VEILED WITHOUT HAVING READ EXPERIMENT IN TERROR. Wait, did you get that?? YOU CAN READ VEILED WITHOUT HAVING READ EXPERIMENT IN TERROR!!!
Okay, now that we have that out of the way, you’re gonna read Veiled now, right??? Right?? (You’d better).

I first discovered Karina Halle when I saw a trusted reviewer on Goodreads review one of her Experiment in Terror books. So one day during jury duty I picked up Darkhouse and the rest is history. I fell in love. So when EIT ended and there was a possibility of an Ada book, I waited and hoped and dreamed. And it didn’t come. When I gave up hope that Veiled would happen, something magic happened: Karina wrote it!

So I am beyond ecstatic we have Ada’s story, it truly is a special gift to EIT fans and quite honestly, any Karina fan. I want ALL my friends to read this book!!!! Beware, because I will start pushing this one on you if I haven’t started already.

“You have a fight ahead of you, one that goes far beyond what you’ve seen in your dreams.”

Now let’s get back on track. Veiled is the story of Ada Palamino, eighteen years old and already well aware of the fact that ghosts and demons haunt our world. After the death of her mother, two years later she is still reeling. Her nightmares become more vivid and strange things begin to happen around her. On top of this, a sexy ginger from her dreams pops up in real life, meant to be her guide and protector. As crazier stuff keeps happening, Ada must learn to find her inner strength and fight the demons surrounding her, figurative and literal.

“The past doesn’t define us. It’s what we do here and now, today that does. This world was built on second chances.”

Veiled is equal parts scary, sexy and intense. This is a book where I resented needing to accomplish real world tasks because I wanted to constantly be in Ada and Jay’s world! I also made the mistake reading the majority of this book at night, not a wise idea. I was pee in my pants terrified at some parts and wished I had my own sexy ginger to keep me safe and warm at night. Speaking of sexy gingers, leave it to Karina Halle to create a hot sexy GINGER that I swooned over. And I’m not even really attracted to gingers!!!! But Jay is the sexy, smoldery exception.

I loved the feel of this book, it was uniquely Ada if that makes any sense. This book was about Ada transitioning from a girl to a woman and finding her inner strength to fight for the people she loved. Ada overcame her fears and her demons, fighting for the side of good while trying to survive at the same time. Ada and Jay were perfect for each other, their romance sigh worthy. I would love to see more of the two of them, but I am happy enough for this book to have happened!!!

Again I would like to reiterate, Veiled can be read as a standalone despite technically being a spinoff book! You do not have to read the Experiment in Terror series first (unless you want to).

“You’re destined for something great, Ada. I know this. And it’s an honor to help see you through it.”

VEILED by Karina Halle – Release Blitz

veiled available now

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Lie and The Pact comes a new romance that will test your limits and leave you breathless.

Death.

It’s something that Ada Palomino has always known so well, having grown up in a house of horrors, surrounded by a family plagued by ghosts and demons and things that go bump in the night.

But after the sudden and tragic death of her mother two years ago, death has never felt so personal.

Or so close.

Now eighteen, Ada is trying to move on with her life and the last month of summer holds nothing but sunshine and promises with her first year at a Portland design school just around the bend.

That is until her increasingly violent and realistic dreams, dreams of other worlds, of portals and veils where her mother is tortured and souls bleed for mercy, start to blend into reality. Ada has to lean on

her older sister, Perry, to try and make sense of it all but even then, she's never felt more alone.

Then there’s Jay. Tall, handsome and deeply mysterious, Jay would be just another stranger, a familiar face on the bus, if it wasn’t for the fact that Ada has met him before.

Every night.

In every single dream.

And the more that Ada is drawn to him in both worlds, the more she’s in danger of losing everything.

Including her heart.

And her very soul.

QUESTIONS ABOUT VEILED

Q: Is this YA?

A: No. The main character is 18 and there is sex, crude language and violence in the book. It is recommended for mature teens or 18 and up.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger?

A: Nope! There’s also no cheating and no love triangle (think I’ve covered the bases there!)

Q: Do I need to read the series (Experiment in Terror) that Veiled is a spinoff of first?

A: Absolutely not. Veiled stands alone. You do not need to have read the EIT series beforehand as this follows a different character (Ada Palomino) and a different storyline. However for those who have read

EIT, all your favorites are in the book!

Q: Is it horror? Your other series was and I don't handle scary very well…

A: No, it’s paranormal romance (though I promise you there are no vampires or werewolves), and while there are creepy elements to the story, it wouldn’t be classified as horror. If you can read KMM’s Fever Series or ANY urban fantasy, you’ll be fine.

EXCERPT

Then, out of nowhere:

“You looked beautiful tonight, by the way.”

Oh jeez. Be still my fucking heart.

I try and swallow, his words, the sincerity in his voice rocking my world off-balance. “Which part? When the power went out or when Jacob went upstairs to fight a demon?” I joke. But I joke because I’m feeling this a little too much.

“All of it. You know why I call you Princess?” he asks, his tone graver than before, like he’s letting me in on a very deep secret.

“Because I’m a spoiled brat?”

“Because you’re beautiful.”

Well that shut me up. The sentence hangs in the air, larger than life.

He clears his throat and goes on and I have to fight against the urge to roll over and face him. “You have this way about you. You don’t see it. But I do. Like you’re born royalty. The way you hold yourself. Your walk. The face of an angel.”

Butterflies take flight in my gut, spreading through my veins until my whole body feels like it’s floating.

“Why are you being so nice to me? Am I going to die?”

He laughs softly. “I don’t know why I’m saying these things. Just seemed like the things to say. You’re destined for something great, Ada, I know this. And it’s an honor to help see you through it.”

His words cascade down on me like ashes from a fire. Where they land, I’m ignited.

Jay thinks I’m beautiful.

And more than that, he believes in me.

Silence settles over us, stealing time. I hear him breathing in the dark, steady as a heartbeat. He might even be sleeping.

But I can’t even begin to shut down. My entire body, from the top of my scalp, down to my toes, is buzzing with heat and electricity. It’s like everything I felt for him before, everything I try to ignore, is coming out in full force, responding to his words, to his body so close to mine. I can feel the warmth at my back, sinking into my spine, just from his presence only.

I’m starting to have feelings for him. Not just in a he’s a giant hulking beast who’s here to protect me from the underworld way. But real feelings, slowly creeping into my heart, day by day.

The thought is terrifying in the same way that demons are terrifying.

They both might take possession of me.

They both might ruin me.

And I’m not sure how much of me I’ll have left.

EXCERPT:

Franka

“You need to leave,” I declared.

His brows drew together a moment before his expression showed clearly that comprehension had dawned.

Sadly, comprehension might have dawned but he didn’t leave.

He crouched by the bed and offered in a soft voice, “You need me to carry you to the other room so you can have a bit of privacy?”

Dear goddess.

He thought I needed a chamber pot.

But…

What was happening to my face?

Dear goddess!

The heat I felt in my cheeks could be nothing other than me blushing.

I didn’t blush. I’d never blushed. Not even when I’d set about seducing my first lover at age sixteen.

I needed to be quit of this man as soon as possible.

“No…I…do…not,” I bit out.

“Sure?” he asked kindly.

“I need you to leave, Noctorno,” I used his full name in an effort to irritate, something that worked if the flare in his eyes was any indication, “so Josette can prepare me. We’re away to Kristian’s this morning.”

Another drawing of his brows before he asked, “What?”

“After my toilette, Josette and I are to my sleigh so we can begin our journey to my brother’s home.”

His eyes got bigger as his mouth inquired peculiarly, “Are you high?”

“No,” I answered his ridiculous question unnecessarily, “Indeed, I’m low. As you can see since I’m lying abed.”

For a second he just stared at me.

Then he threw his head back and burst into loud, deep, beautiful laughter.

I wanted to throw something at him.

Unfortunately, in my current position, this was not an option open to me.

“I fail to see what’s amusing,” I noted.

He controlled his mirth only to mutter, “I’ll explain it later.” He went on more distinctly, “Frannie, you’re not goin’ to your brother’s today. Ortomorrow. Or until you’re fit. Then, maybe Valentine will spirit you there, or whatever the fuck that’s called. But for the foreseeable future, your ass is in that bed and you’re resting so you can heal.”

Well!

Who did he think he was, telling me what I would or would not do?

“As you’ve determined,” I began, “this is not the first time I’ve been in this condition so I do believe that I know best what I’m capable of and…”

I stopped speaking because he came slightly out of his crouch so he could put his face into my face and he was no longer looking mirthful.

He was looking angry.

Very angry.

“That was when you had no one lookin’ out for you but that’s not the case anymore. So this is how it’s gonna be,” he announced.

He then, to my shock, irritation and outrage, announced how it was going to be.

Like he had the right to tell me how it was going to be!

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.
Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Man Candy

Man Candy by Melanie Harlow

3.75-4 stars!

Man Candy was a funny and intense read! Jaime threw herself at her brother’s best friend Quinn when she was a teenager and he rejected her. Now ten years later she still feels that rejection, and it’s brought to the surface when he moves into the apartment below her while his place is ready. The two embark on a sexual relationship, but Jaime doesn’t believe in love and wants a no strings attached situation. Quinn decides it’s up to him to prove to her love exists.

I love role reversal in romance novels, where the man has to do the convincing and chasing instead of the woman. I wish there were more of these types of romance novels. And while I expected angst from this book it was surprisingly angst free (good for those of you angst allergic readers). This book was cute, steamy and humorous and I need to read more by Harlow asap!

Swear on This Life

Swear on This Life by Renee Carlino

5 stars!!!

“It’s easy to let yourself become the burden of your own life, especially when you were given the label of being a burden before you could even reject it.”

Swear on This Life is about Emiline, a young writer struggling to find her voice in her work. When a friend hands her a bestselling novel from a new author, Emiline is shocked to discover this author has written her life story, from her perspective. The only person who could have known all of this about her is one boy from her past, one she hasn’t seen in years.

As Emiline reads the book, it drudges up feelings she thought she had locked away. Emiline is angry that he wrote the story from her perspective and wants answers as to why he wrote it the way he did.

“The past would only fester and eat away at us if we tried to hold on to it too tightly.”

First off I have to say what everyone else has been saying… I’ve never read a book quite like this one. It’s a story that’s so unique and I think Renee Carlino was the perfect woman to write it. I regret to say this is my first book I’ve read by her, and I’ve met the woman twice! I’ll be reading all her books as soon as I can because this one blew me away. It took me a while to write this review because I was processing so many of the feelings this book invoked in me.

From the first page I was utterly absorbed in the story, I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted more of Emiline and Jase. Reading about their journey from childhood to teen years, and eventually to present adulthood is a journey I would happily read over and over again. Even with all of the dark spots in their lives, it was quite simply, beautiful.

“We can’t always control our circumstances, who our parents are, where we live, or how much money we make, but in those rare moments when we can shape our fate, when we do have the power to make our own happiness, we can’t be scared to do it.”

This book isn’t just a romance, it’s about a complex main character struggling to deal with the pain of her past and the woman she became because of it. I liked the idea that J Colby’s book helped her revisit her past and challenged her feelings about it. At one point while reading this book, I burst into tears. In public. On a freaking airplane. And believe me I have a heart of ice so this kind of thing happens…. never. That’s how powerful this book is.

Anyways, if I haven’t been clear enough, you need to read this book the moment it comes out. Do whatever needs to be done to get your grubby hands on it, because this book is something special and I honestly think anyone could read and enjoy this story.

“I love you, Emiline. I loved you before I even knew what it meant.”
“I love you too, Jase… I’ll love you forever.”
“Swear to me.”
“I swear I want this.”

Broken Dove

Broken Dove by Kristen Ashley

4 stars

“A dove has great beauty, but is easily broken.”

Broken Dove, the fourth book in the Fantasyland series, is the story of Apollo and Maddie. Apollo lost his wife Ilsa, and mother of his children when she died from a sudden illness. Grief stricken for years, he discovers there is a parallel universe, our world, where a twin of his wife is still alive. Apollo also learns this other Ilsa has an abusive husband Pol, so he journey’s to this world to rescue her and bring her into his.

This new Ilsa is a disappointment to Apollo, she’s not the same Ilsa he expected. But Apollo has approaching threats which puts Maddie in danger, but Apollo will do everything he can to keep her safe.

“It’s my experience that a weakness understood is no weakness. If you know you have it, even if you can’t control it, you can make allowances for it. It is those who ignore or don’t understand their weaknesses who are wasted by them.”

This was actually my second attempt at reading this book, the first time I tried reading it I put it down at 17% with the intention of returning to it later….. and it took a while lol. But with the upcoming release of the fifth book I wanted to be caught up on the series. I enjoyed reading this much more the second attempt, and while it doesn’t have the WOW factor the first 3 books had for me, I still really enjoyed this story.

Apollo and Maddie were an interesting couple and had a hard balance for Ashley to pull off but she did. Apollo being in love with Ilsa and then Maddie, you would think there would be a lot of issues but Ashley did a wonderful job of highlighting the differences between the two women and why Apollo fell for them both. He was kind of a dick at the beginning but over time he grew on me and at the end of the book he was amazing.

Maddie was a great heroine, I felt she was very resilient after everything that happened to her and she was strong. This book was also about her struggle regaining her self worth after her husband Pol had beaten it out of her. Apollo helped her with this a bit, but it was mostly a journey for herself.

Anyways, I think this is Kristen Ashley’s BEST series, so if you haven’t read it yet now is the time as the fifth book is coming out soon!!

“Remember this kiss,” he ordered on a whisper, his eyes staring into mine.
There weren’t many kisses Apollo had given me that I didn’t remember.
I didn’t share that.
I asked, “Why?”
“Because it is special,” he answered.
“They’re all special, Lo,” I pointed out and watched his eyes smile even as I felt his lips do the same.
“They are, dove,” he agreed. “But this one, the first I will give you knowing you return yours with love, will be the one I most treasure for the rest of my life.”

Torn

Torn by Jennifer Armentrout

4.5 stars!!

There will be slight spoilers from the previous book in this review. If you don’t want Wicked spoilers STOP READING NOW!!! Okay? Okay.

Ivy Morgan is a member of The Order, a group with a mission to go out and kill Fae living in the human world. At the end of the previous book she was almost killed by the Fae Prince, until he discovered she is the halfling he has been looking for. This secret throws Ivy and she has no idea who to trust with this information. Because the Prince needs Ivy to create an apocalypse baby, and The Order wants the halfling dead.

Should Ivy tell her boyfriend, Ren, the man she loves? Or keep it a secret and run?

Recently some of the stuff JLA has put out has been quite the miss for me, and I love her books. So I was a bit scared going into this book that I wouldn’t like it, but I needn’t have worried. Reading this book was like coming home. I ADORED this book, so so much. Even more than the first book. It was also easy to read this book despite reading Wicked two years ago.

Ivy’s struggles with who she was and what that meant pulled at my heart, I felt for the girl so much. She was basically put in an impossible situation and I couldn’t even figure out what she should do. The Prince was creepy AF, and honestly gave me the shivers (of ick).

But my favorite part? TINK. That fairy man makes the book. I want him to have his own book, I think it could easily be done.

This book was equal parts suspenseful, angsty, sweet and awesome. I only hope that the next book really does release in summer of 2017.

Moonshot

Moonshot by Alessandra Torre

4 stars!

“Life is a series of stupid decisions interrupted by luck.”

Tyler Rollins lived most of her life working as a bat girl for the Yankees, the team her father played for. At seventeen years old she’s close to graduating high school from home school and has secured a job with the Yankees after. Chase Stern also enters her life, a new player for the team. Knowing his reputation, Tyler’s father asks her to stay away from him. But Ty and Chase have a connection from the very beginning, a genuine one that cannot be denied.

“A woman shouldn’t be created in such heartbreakingly beautiful combinations. A woman shouldn’t, in fifteen minutes, have the ability to ruin him for life.”

This book came as a bit of a shock to me, Torre can be a hit or a miss and this book was definitely a hit! I went into this book knowing many of the spoilers (because I am a spoiler whore) and I think it helped me personally with this book as there are aspects not everyone would love. Some things bugged me but I was able to look past them and enjoy.

I was surprised to find that this book had one of my favorite tropes: second chance romance. While the first half of the book was very romantic and sweet, the second half had the angst I wish for in every book with a tiny bit of suspense thrown in. I really loved the romance story, Chase and Ty were amazing. I just wish the suspense aspect was gone because it didn’t seem necessary at all. This book would have been 5 stars without it.

Anyways, I know there are a lot of baseball books out right now but I have really enjoyed every single one I’ve read. So you don’t want to miss out on this one!

“As a teenager, he had corrupted me. As a woman, he had ruined me.”

Thank you to the ladies at BBU, I won this ebook from them in a FB giveaway. You ladies rock!

His Royal Secret

His Royal Secret by Lilah Pace

3.5 stars!

His Royal Secret is about the Prince of England, James. James has a secret, he’s gay. In a world that is fairly gay friendly you would think this wouldn’t be an issue, but when it comes to the monarchy the rules change. On a trip to Africa, James meets political reporter Ben during a rainstorm, and the attraction is instant. Neither one have had sex for a while, but find an instant sexual chemistry.

Living in different countries, the two part thinking they will never see each other again. But when Ben is reassigned to England a few months later, James and Ben begin a secret affair of the friends with benefits style. The more the two spend time together and get to know each other, it becomes less sex only and more of a mutual admiration for the other. But with James in the closet there can be no hope for something more and it puts a limit on their relationship.

I’m a huge fan of the MM genre, it’s my go to whenever I want something guilty pleasure to read. The plot in this one is a bit different, I personally have not come across any royal gay romances and I enjoyed that aspect, even though royalty romance isn’t normally my thing.

Lilah Pace did a wonderful job at making the entire situation feel real, the what if’s of having a homosexual prince in modern times and the options available to James. There are so many things standing in the way of him coming out and Pace listed all of them, displaying the extremely difficult position James was in. It’s completely overwhelming and when seeing what he stood against, I felt so bad for the guy.

Ben was an intriguing love interest, a reporter but one with morals and not out to use James to get ahead. I felt the more time Ben spent with James he understood what James stodd against. He tried very hard not to fall for James, but there’s something very endearing about the prince that just works its way into your heart. Ultimately the ending was not what I expected in a good way, and I do want to see what happens with this couple in the next installment.

Stealing Home

Stealing Home-Teaser3

Stealing Home by Nicole Williams

4.5 stars!

“You know how this game works. I know how.”
“You just have to decide if you want to play.”
“Because you have decided?”
“Doc, I’m already playing.”

Nicole Williams is an author that has a special place in my heart, mostly for the Lost and Found series. Because of this I signed up for an arc of this book and I am so glad I did! This is Nicole Williams as we have never seen her before! From the books I’ve read, normally they are sweet on the side of clean. This book was steamy, sexy and hot!

Stealing Home is about Allie, a athletic trainer for the Shock’s baseball team. Eager to keep her new job, she works harder than anyone else to keep the players in shape and medically safe. Luke is the hottest and best player on the team, and he expresses a romantic interest in Allie. But he’s one of the players on the team (not to be mistaken for a playboy) and Allie doesn’t want to risk her job.

Luke. Luke Luke Luke Luke Luke. I friggin love that man!! Was he an alpha hero? No. Did that make him seem weak? Not at all. He’s a trained athlete with a tragic past, and when he saw what he wanted, he went for it. Maybe not right away, he was careful and observed Allie first to make sure she was a good person, but he made up his mind and went for it. I totally fell for Luke, he’s a friggin amazing book boyfriend. But then again, there has yet to be a boy Nicole has written about who isn’t book boyfriend material.

Allie’s internal struggle with the decision to be with Luke, I totally felt for the woman. She’d been hurt in the past and had doubts about her job being affected. I loved her as a heroine and totally related to all that she felt.

If you’re looking for a fun summer romance with an amazing hero, some serious steam and a little bit of angst, this is the book for you!

Anything But Minor

Anything But Minor Teaser 4

Anything But Minor by Kate Stewart

4.5 stars!!!

I always know one thing going into a Kate Stewart book: she’s gonna leave me with a big old smile on my face.

“I’m not sure what you want me to think of you, Rafe.”
“I’m pretty sure I just want you to think of me, Alice.”

Anything But Minor is about a woman named Alice who has left Ohio to live in Charleston and has a new career as a flight instructor. Having been sheltered by her mother her entire life, Charleston is Alice’s chance to live free and discover new things. On a whim, she attends a baseball game for the local minor league team where she meets Rafe, the star pitcher. Rafe makes it clear from the beginning he is interested in Alice, but Alice wants something more substantial than a fling. The two agree to be friends but there is an attraction between them that Rafe doesn’t want to deny.

“I may be wrong about you, I think. I thought you were one of those bone-headed, stupid athletes who only cared about baseball and women. But I have a feeling you’re worth knowing.”

I really loved reading the progression of the relationship between Rafe and Alice, their adventures together and the little moments where they got to know each other. Alice is quirky and nerdy and I loved her. I loved that Rafe embraced her nerdiness and quirks, and he saw how her past made her the woman she was. Rafe, he was quite the hero. Friendly, strong, and determined, I also loved that he was a big dude! Cause I like my alpha males and all.

The side characters are a delightful cherry on top and I am dying to see them again. I really want to see more from Kristina as I adored her friendship with Alice. The VHS tapes at the beginning of the chapters were another awesome touch to the book, in fact this entire book just made me want to sit down and watch 80’s movies.

Another great book from Kate Stewart and I look forward to what’s to come!

“I’ve got you.”

Up In Flames

Up In Flames by Abbi Glines

3.5 stars

Let me get something off of my chest first. I liked Nan, like REALLY liked her as a character in this book. Well done Abbi for taking the villain and showing her readers the person Nan really is.

“I wanted to be someone’s Harlow. Or Blaire. But I’d always just be Nan. And Nan wasn’t enough. I never had been, and I was done trying to be.”

If you’ve read anything in the Rosemary Beach series, you know who Nan is. She’s the villain, the slut, the bitch. After years of not being wanted, Nan is in the midst of a friends with benefits arrangement with Major, who calls her when he wants but always runs away with the hint of more. Fed up with Major, Nan takes a break and heads to Vegas where she meets Gannon. Gannon is a man, he knows what he wants and he wants Nan, but he remains a mystery and distant.

“She had wanted me. Now she didn’t. That was the hardest thing to accept: not knowing what you have until it’s gone. The fact was, Nan made me laugh. Her haughtiness was a mask she used to cover up the vulnerability underneath. I’d seen it.”

I really loved the inside look we got with Nan in this story. In the past couple of books we had seen glimpses of Nan being redeemable, but here we get all the tidbits we never have before. I have always said Nan’s behavior came from the fact that she was insecure and indeed it did. When you have a mother that terrible and no father to love you, you lash out for attention in any way you can. In this book Nan has finally reached the point where she realizes you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and she is treating other characters with kindness, mostly Blaire.

What I was really hoping for in this book was more of a resolution between Nan and all of the other characters and their acceptance of her and unfortunately that didn’t happen. I was really hoping for better relationships with Nan and her two other siblings but Mase didn’t seem open to it and Harlow wasn’t really around. I am hoping maybe this happens in other books to come? Pretty please?

This book wasn’t heavy on the romance, but I like that Nan found her man. He seemed like the perfect fit for her, a man who wouldn’t put up with any bullcrap and it worked! I just wish there has been less of a mob story and more romance.

Nan haters, I dare you to give this a shot!!!

“I didn’t inspire men to want to change for me. Admitting that hurt deeply, but it was something I was coming to terms with.”

Tragic

Tragic by JA Huss

3.5-4 stars

“But it’s better to have bad options than no options. And people won’t save you either, ya know.”

I enjoyed this book from JA Huss, a fairly new to me author. She’s one I’ve been meaning to read more of her stuff for a long time and I finally squeezed it in. This was a very compelling book, I loved getting to know Rook, she’s a haunting character. I still don’t know how I feel about Ronin. To be honest, the reason this book wasn’t rated higher from me was the characters (other than Rook) were all over the place. I could never tell who was good or bad, one second a nice one and another a bad guy. And it didn’t feel intentional….

BUT, otherwise I love Huss’ writing style, the plot was very compelling and I am curious as to where this is all going, especially when I read the blurb for book 2. So, onward!

“Ronin Flynn, you might undo me.”
“I’m already undone, Gidge. I’m just hoping you’ll stick around long enough to put me back together.”
